It’s great to have you with us! Ready to take a mysterious bite this month? Will it be a mouth-watering treat or a spooky surprise? 👻

With Halloween creeping closer, we’re unwrapping a thrilling October packed with awareness and celebration: ADHD Awareness Month and Dyspraxia Awareness Week. Let’s make it a frightfully fun tribute to understanding, inclusion, and acceptance!

But hold on!

Before we dig in: This issue is packed with treasures and inspiring reads and you might find yourself tumbling down a rabbit hole of discovery (we totally do that too), but just like Alice, don’t forget to hop back. There’s plenty more waiting for you!

ADHD Awareness:

You might be thinking, "Everyone's talking about ADHD," and we say, "Finally!" It's about time we build more understanding and compassion for each other – and, most importantly, for ourselves! Those of you who are late-diagnosed or self-diagnosed know all too well how hard we've been on ourselves for our unique brain chemistry and for those moments when things just don’t get done. Navigating a world built for neurotypicals can be a real challenge, which is why we need this awareness, and we’re here to help you thrive and shine!

Dyspraxia/ DCD Awareness:

Never heard of Dyspraxia or DCD? No worries, we’ve got you covered! It’s a neurodevelopmental condition that brings challenges with coordination and movement.

Blue Banana Bites this October

ART BITES

Meet the artist

I’m Enni Tapionkaski, originally from the north of Finland and now based in southern England.

I often draw inspiration from my dreams, nature, mythology, fairy tales, and folklore, especially from the Finno-Ugric cultures.

The Changeling – Finding Magic in Difference

Enni’s first Fairy Tale Book

I started this project by creating the doll at the end of 2024, and naturally, a story began to build in my mind. I decided to write the story in Finnish and then translate it into English. The doll is a faegoblin changeling who accidentally takes the form of a goat during her mischievous adventure. Her name is Sleetbud Windwhistle. She’s bullied by the other faegoblins of Fourthmoor, but she’s determined to show her kind how mighty she truly is and win their respect. However, during her attempts, not everything goes according to plan, and she discovers something she has never encountered before – unconditional love. This story is an ode to Finnish folklore and stories, the northern nature, and a warm hug to one’s chosen family.

How do your pieces reflect transformation, empathy, or intuition?

This fairytale is all about transformation, both physically and mentally. With love comes a great deal of empathy, and it is this empathy that sparks the transformation in my character, Sleetbud Windwhistle.

Faegoblin Changeling Posable Doll

The intuition was sparked by my inspiration, or maybe it was the other way around. I’ve been called “a changeling” by my family my whole life. They say it in a loving way, but it stems from the fact that I have never quite fit in. I was the weird kid, always in my own head. I couldn’t listen, I was lazy, I couldn’t focus, a total daydreamer, my appearance didn’t follow the norms, the words I spoke were out of this world, and so on. Writing this story helped me heal my inner child. I have found people with similar minds, and I have found unconditional love.

From Helka’s tarot deck to Ihana Tarot and LoviemoArt what moments shaped your path?

In the early 2000s, I discovered my nan’s Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck. I began creating stories with the images and characters of the cards. I remember the Knight of Pentacles being my favorite. I didn’t realize it then, but I was already using my intuition and creativity to study tarot.

My nan used to collect antiques and erotic art in paintings and sculptures. It had a positive influence on my own body confidence as well. I felt empowered by it all.

Can you tell us a bit about Loviemo art?

I started sculpting vulva sculptures and creating drawings based on female genitalia because, in the original Finnish religions and beliefs, women hold the gateway between the underworld our worlds between their legs. With my art, I want to remind people of their power and remove the shame we have been taught to feel about our bodies. Loviemo can be translated to "gateway-mother."

Would you also say that you have some kind of superpower that neurodivergence has given you?

Now, as a late-diagnosed adult with ADHD, dyspraxia, and tic disorder, I have learned how to embrace my uniqueness. It's the special interests and hyperfocus studying those special interests.

Is there a message you would like to share with other neurodivergent creatives?

Do the things that made you or your younger self happy. For me, art is definitely one of those things for myself, creating something, playing with clay. It doesn't have to be good. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to creating something perfect.

How do you keep Halloween enjoyable and sensory friendly?

I have found a small group of other neurodivergent women, and we're having a little private get-together house party. We're obviously going to dress up, but it's going to be in our own small little bubble.

HOT BITE OF THE MONTH

How to Make “Poke a Pumpkin” a Spooktacular Productivity Hack

Hey there, productivity wizard! Are you feeling a bit overwhelmed by your to-do list?

Fear not! We’ve got a treat (or maybe a trick?) for you! Introducing: the Halloween-themed gamification extravaganza designed to keep your tasks in check while having fun!

What You’ll Need

  • 30 Cups: The more, the merrier! Think of them as your little pumpkin pals.

  • Treats: Fill some cups with sweet treats (or your healthy little snacks).

  • Orange Construction Paper: To transform those cups into an adorable pumpkin.

  • Green Construction Paper: For those cute little stems.

  • Rubber Bands: To keep everything nice and secure.

  • Glue: If you want to go the extra mile and stick it down.

How to Create Your Pumpkin Patch

  1. Fill the Cups: Start by filling some of your 30 cups with treats. Remember, not every cup gets a surprise.

  2. Craft Your Pumpkins:

    • Cut out orange construction paper and place it over each cup.

    • Use the green construction paper for the stems. Cut out a couple of leaf shapes if you’re feeling a little extra.

    • Secure everything in place with a rubber band. If needed, a dab of glue will hold them tight.

  3. Display Your Creation: You can either glue your pumpkin cups onto a board for a festive display or simply arrange them nicely on a table.

How to Play

Now comes the fun part! You can either play solo or invite some friends who also have to-do lists (because let’s be honest, misery loves company, right?).

Task Time: As you complete each task on your to-do list, you get to poke one of the cups! Will you get a treat? Or will it be empty? The suspense is captivating!

Why It Works

Gamification is a fantastic way to keep your brain engaged, especially for neurodivergent folks. Turning tasks into a fun game adds an element of excitement and can even boost your motivation and dopamine. Plus, who doesn’t love a good surprise?

Happy poking!
